This morning Laiya spent almost 4 hours at Dutton Christian being tested with Mr. Yoder from the Christian Learning Center. She was really nervous when I left her there, but some of the 6th grade girls took her around at break time and she did fine. Math and problem solving was where she really did well, but her English language skills limited some of the other tests. He said she was very meticulous about her work. We have a tutor lined up to start next week and he was very happy to hear that. He said that if she works real hard on her English, she should do well in 8th grade next year. We don't want her to get discouraged because she won't do as well as she did at her school in Hong Kong, where she was 4th out of her class of 38. She will begin school on Monday. Mr. Yoder reminded me that she hasn't even been home for a week. He said that in a few more weeks, after hearing only English, she will really blossom. We are very happy with how things are going so far. Tomorrow our social worker will come to meet her, so that will be interesting, too. We would love to see as many of you as possible at the open house next week - Friday, May 11, from 7-9 pm, at South Chr. High School - You are all invited!!

Glad to hear the testing went well. Hopefully some of the anxiety about her English skill will fade. She certainly seems to understand English very well.
Johnny said he met Laiya at school yesterday! That's great. Hope it continues to go well. Love you, Denise
